Who I am
Welcome to my pottery studio! My name is Maureen, and I’m a Newfoundland-born artist now living in beautiful New Brunswick. After spending many years immersed in the world of curating and history, I’ve made a shift to focus on my lifelong passion for pottery. Though my path has changed, my work still remains deeply connected to the landscapes and people of Atlantic Canada.
For much of my career, I was a curator and historian, working with the rich cultural history of Newfoundland and Labrador. I had the privilege of exploring the material culture of our province — curating exhibitions that told the stories of daily life, wartime experiences, and family traditions. I traveled throughout Newfoundland, listening to community members and gathering objects and stories that shaped the fabric of our shared history. Whether it was a soldier’s letter, a family heirloom, or a wedding dress, I’ve always believed that every object has a story waiting to be told.
After years of working at The Rooms in St. John’s, I made the decision to leave my position as Curator of History and follow my heart into the world of pottery. Moving to New Brunswick has been both a personal and professional journey, bringing me closer to the vibrant artistic community and natural beauty of the Maritime provinces. The landscape here — with its rugged coastlines, rolling hills, and ever-changing skies — has inspired my work in ways I never imagined. The people, too, with their resilience and deep-rooted connections to the land, continue to fuel my creativity.
Pottery, for me, is an extension of my lifelong fascination with material culture and storytelling. I see each piece as a conversation between past and present, and I strive to create works that reflect the unique beauty and history of Atlantic Canada. Every bowl, pot, and sculpture I craft carries with it the influence of the land, the people, and the stories of this place.
